Three Creative Uses for Baseboards

crown molding3Do you look down at your floor much? If you’re the one tasked with keeping the surfaces of your home clean, than you probably look down when you walk more often than not. The condition and style of your baseboards, the panels that connect the bottom of walls to the floor, can make a huge impact on the overall appearance of your home and flooring. Rather than standard white baseboards that could belong to any home, consider these awesome baseboard ideas to add some creativity to your home design!

Change the Color

Though baseboards are predominantly white for simplicity, you can play with the colors to add a bit of flare to your home. Your steps are a great place to do this. If your stars are brown wood, you can paint the base of each step black or red for a beautiful contrast. Another option is to use two-paneled baseboards with one layer remaining white and the other adopting a different color like brown or coral. You definitely need to know your room’s color scheme for this idea to play out well.

Use Small Lights

There’s no rule stating that your baseboards must only be made of paneling material! Install recessed lighting into all of your baseboards in any given room to create a polished appearance that also adds character to the atmosphere of your home. This is an especially great idea for hallways, living or dining rooms, and basements. The recessed lighting can also replace night lights so that your house always has a soft glow, even at midnight.

Incorporate Drawers

Short on kitchen storage space? What if all of the baseboards in your kitchen were transformed so that all of the space held drawers instead? These drawers would be the perfect size for cookie sheets, muffin tins, and all of the odds and ends you never really found a home for in your more standard drawers. You could even get really creative and use those drawers to store all of your toddler’s toys so she can enjoy ripping through all of the drawers without actually causing any damage.
