3 Unique Ways to Breathe New Life into Your Home

crown moldingWhen I was growing up my mom had a friend who would buy a huge, gorgeous house overlooking picturesque farm land, decorate it like something from a magazine, and sell it a few years later to start the process over. Every single time we visited that friend throughout my childhood, she lived in a different (exquisite) home. Perhaps you can identify with her need for change but you’re not quite ready to sell your whole house in order to add a bit of variety in your life.

Fortunately for you, there are many different minor construction techniques that you can complete in your home to give the appearance of a new, fresh house, but without the hassle of moving boxes. Below are my three personal favorite because they are elegant, relatively simple, and affordable in the world of home improvements.

Wainscoting

Every time I walk into a house with this feature, I get wainscoting envy. Honestly, it’s probably my favorite feature of house. Wainscoting is decorative wooden paneling that lines the lower part of the walls of a room. It actually dates back to the 14th century Dutch, who used it to shield walls from riding boot spurs and out of control scabbards (both definitely current concerns in my household, how about yours?). If you need a simple, elegant, subtle style change for your home, this is the winner!

Crown Molding

This wooden trim at the meeting of wall and ceiling adds a look of tasteful elegance to any room. This is the simplest home improvement project that immediately makes your home look more sophisticated and expensive.

Interior Doors

Modern homes have bedroom and bathroom doors of course, but few have beautiful glass framed doors that separate main rooms. Perhaps you want to change the style of your home’s office double doors or add an interior door between the dining room and the kitchen. A simple wooden door with artistic glass panes can add a gorgeous statement to any home.
